KIMBERLEY MARTIN AND KATE MOSS WERE GUEST SPEAKERS AT THE
LI-VE TASMANIA’S DYING TO KNOW DAY

On 8 August 2017, Directors Kimberley Martin and Kate Moss presented as guest speakers at the Li-Ve Tasmania’s Dying to Know Day Event.

Dying to Know Day is an annual day of action dedicated to bringing to life conversations and community actions around death, dying and bereavement.  Dying to Know Day events activate conversations and curiosity, build literacy about death, and help grow the capacity of individuals and community groups to take action about end of life planning.

Kimberley spoke about the importance of Estate Planning including some of the key documents that people should put in place, including Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Instruments Appointing Enduring Guardians.  She also spoke about the importance of discussing an estate plan with loved ones.

Kate spoke about estate administration and the impact of not having a Will when a person dies.  Kim and Kate also took part in a “I can’t ask that” style panel of speakers, and responded to an interesting range of questions posed by the audience.

Kim and Kate received the following feedback from the organiser: “Your presentations were informative, open and certainly thought provoking for many in the room.  Feedback from people with disability, parents/families of people with disability, students and service providers present was overwhelmingly positive”.

Some important take home messages for all included

• 75% of people have not had end of life discussions with their families
• 45% of people die without a Will
• talking clearly about death and dying is important, particularly for those working in areas that deal directly with death and dying, and provide advice, in this area.  Euphemisms like “passed away” or “has gone to a better place” might seem like a gentle way of talking about death, but often leads to misunderstanding and confusion
